‘6G’ iPod rumored to get update for August

Rumours of a trimmed down full iPod arriving possibly in the first half of August are beginning to appear. Apple’s full-sized iPod could be about to receive an update, possibly as soon as the first two weeks in August. Apple engineers have trimmed the height of the popular player while still maintaining the essential design of the 320x240-pixel screen and clickwheel. The height cut could be as much as an inch (2.5cm) and bring the iPod down to similar dimensions to a Blackberry device.

However, the most important new features are likely to be underneath the surface where rumours of a new iPod operating system are said to be true, which borrows a number of features from the recently release Apple iPhone. It’s likely that Apple will refer to the new model as the 6G iPod. Meanwhile, Apple has reported a bumper third-quarter for its 2006-07 financial year ending June 30, posting revenue of $US5.41billion for the quarter and a net profit of $US818million, up from the $US4.37billion/$472million revenue/profit split for the same quarter last year.
